Kehrenbach Hunting Lodge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The former hunting lodge Kehrenbach is an abandoned castle in the Kehrenbach valley in the Stölzinger mountains . It was located in the district of Kehrenbach in the north Hessian town of Melsungen at the foot of the Schlossberg.

history

The place Kehrenbach was first mentioned in 1209 in a property register of the St. Petri Stift Fritzlar . In 1469/70, Landgrave Ludwig II of Hesse ordered the construction of a hunting lodge above Kehrenbach. The building stood on the Kehrenbach, a tributary of the Sälzerweg salt trade road . The Kehrenbach was dammed into a fish pond at this point, with the hunting lodge in the middle. Access was made possible via a drawbridge . The son of Heinrich the Iron , Otto the Schütz , appreciated the "noble woad" in the Stölzinger Mountains. At the end of the 16th century, Landgrave Wilhelm IV had repair work carried out. Landgrave Moritz the Scholar made hand drawings of the castle in 1628 and 1630, showing a building with a massive basement and half-timbered superstructure.

Presumably the castle was looted and destroyed in the Thirty Years War . After that, it gradually fell into disrepair. The pond was used as a fish pond until the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), when it slowly silted up. Today the residential development has overtaken the site and nothing reminds of the former castle.
