Life

The Landgraviate of Hesse was owned by his father Ludwig I between Ludwig II in Niederhessen (residence in Kassel ) and his younger brother Heinrich III. in Upper Hesse (residence in Marburg ) was divided. Until 1470 Ludwig argued with his brother about the exact delimitation of their respective domains and sovereign rights, and in 1469 there was even an open war between the two. The Hessian fratricidal war was only ended in May 1470 through the mediation of the brother of the two opponents, the later Archbishop Hermann IV of Cologne . After the Marburg line died out with Heinrich's son Wilhelm III. In 1500 this part fell back to the Kassel line under Ludwig's son Wilhelm II .

In 1470 Ludwig had Rotenburg Castle built and the castle in Ziegenhain converted into a castle .

From 1464 to May 1471, Ludwig quarreled with Prince-Bishop Simon III. of Paderborn in the Hesse-Paderborn feud that broke out over the possession of Calenberg Castle near Warburg .

After a hunt with his brother in the “Süllingswald” soon after the peace agreement with Bishop Simon, Ludwig died unexpectedly at Reichenbach Castle . Later historians suspected a poison attack. Ludwig II was buried in the Elisabeth Church in Marburg.
