from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William III. , "The Younger", Landgrave of Hesse (* September 8, 1471 ; † February 17, 1500 near Rauschenberg ), ruled over the part of the Landgraviate of Upper Hesse , with residence in Marburg .

Wilhelm was the third son of Landgrave Heinrich III, who ruled Upper Hesse . von Hessen and his wife Anna von Katzenelnbogen . Since the first-born, Friedrich, had died as a toddler and the second son, Ludwig (III.), Had already died at the age of 17 in 1478, Wilhelm was heir to the throne when his father died in 1483. He was still a minor and therefore had his uncle Hermann , Archbishop and Elector of Cologne , and the court master Hans von Dörnberg as guardians until 1489 .

With the rich income of the country, Wilhelm was able to acquire half of Eppstein's rule (including the so-called Ländchen ) in 1492 and part of Klingenberg in 1493 .

In 1498 he married Elisabeth , the daughter of Philip of the Palatinate ; the marriage remained childless.

Wilhelm died early after falling from his horse while hunting near Rauschenberg , leaving no legitimate offspring. His possessions fell to his cousin Wilhelm II of Niederhessen , who was able to reunite the entire Landgraviate of Hesse in one hand.
