Castle Grifte

The castle Grifte was a castle in the district Grifte the community Edermünde in Schwalm-Eder-Kreis , North Hessen , and probably quite modest seat of the noble free men of Grifte . The best-known member of the race was the landgräflich-Hessian bailiff and Castellan Ekkebrecht of Grifte , who was born in 1342 at the castle.

The castle, mentioned for the first time in 1258, was probably located immediately north of today's Protestant village church in the historic center of the village. There, on a hill, in the churchyard, which is still partially surrounded by a defensive wall from the 14th century, there are still two walls of a large Gothic building (of what were once three) with three rectangular doors that led into three separate apartments, and slits and consoles on the Outside.

The lords of Grifte died out in the male line in 1597 with Kurt von Grifte, and their castle was obviously no longer used, except as a quarry. When her heirs, the lords of Meysenbug , von der Malsburg and von Hundelshausen , sold Burg and Gut Grifte to Landgravine Amalie Elisabeth for 8,800 thalers in 1649 , the castle had already fallen into disrepair.
