The Rommershausen Castle is a Renaissance - castle in Schwalmstadt district Rommershausen in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse . The facility, which is in a central location, has the form of a closed courtyard . The property is listed as a cultural monument .

history

In 1535 Reichart Rinck († before 1557) acquired the property of the abolished Haina monastery in Rommershausen and from 1539 had the small castle complex , consisting of three individual buildings, built. It is an irregularly arranged three-wing complex that is grouped around a courtyard. On the west and south sides, the courtyard was closed by a multi-angled, inconsistent wall.

In 1644 the castle passed to the von Hoff family. Since 1765 the castle has been owned by the von Schwertzell family , whose ancestral seat is Willingshausen Castle .

architecture

The east wing

The east wing can be seen as the main building. It was probably made in 1549 and has a decorated portal . The building is two-storey with a massive ground floor made of corner-squared sandstone, the upper storey (as with all wings) consists of half-timbering from the mid-19th century, here slated. The south side features a protruding single-storey canyon . The west side facing the courtyard has a small single-storey porch near the north end that covers the basement entrance, both porches were probably built at the same time as the overall building. The east wing is remarkable for the artistic effort that was made by one of the most famous Renaissance sculptors in North Hesse . In terms of art history, the castle can be assigned to a provincial artistic creation, but the wealth of forms from the early Renaissance as well as those from the late Gothic is remarkable. This connection is characteristic of the early Weser Renaissance . The client had part of his family history processed in the reliefs . All images relate to the death of the wife and the importance of the daughter who probably took her place.

In the middle there is a obtuse, pointed arched portal with a double robe. It has side brackets with Pilasterstücken and kapitell- and frieze-like articles, the overlying ledge is cranked at the ends. The pilasters and cranks show a bas-relief . In it figures in contemporary clothing: on the left a man pointing to his heart, on the right a stabbing woman (probably Tarquinius and Lucretia ), above there are still busts and foliage fighters.

In the middle on the cornice sits a rectangular field with double coats of arms of the Rinck and von Holzheim, from this with the inscription " ANNO DOMINI 1549". Reichart Rinck was married to Margarete von Holzheim . The coat of arms field is framed by bars, the upper ends of which are cranked like a capital with the cornice closing the storey. They show mythical creatures with two fish tails. Left and right of the coat of arms stone are almost semicircular tympanum-like fields with dragons in bas-relief. There are two free-floating medallions in the spandrels between the portal wall and the frame . They show the busts of the builder and his wife. The representation of women is marked as married by the hood over the hair and can therefore be clearly assigned as his wife. The rod robe sits with ornamented plinths on the protruding, profiled plinth of the building.

The building base

Only the front sides of the building, the south and west sides, show a base. The protruding base includes four basement windows and the portal zone at the top and is closed off at the portal itself by a profile on the side. On the west side the base is profiled with carnies , on the south side with a throat , on the cellar windows it also has a ribbed frame. The base has openings to the left (one) and right (two) of the portal. The two on the right are both looped-out, on the left there is an ornamented stone with fan rosettes, on the right a larger ornamented capstone with the year 1549, wreathed with two dolphins and with a segmental arch .

The gable end

The gable side has a centrally shifted bulge. Twin windows are arranged on both sides: on the left with a process arch and a small fool figure on the partition post . The relief itself has the monogram “PS” and a stonemason's mark carved into the relief frame . The Auslucht has a twin window with a bar garment and segmental arched frame, in this and on the bases of the window garments there are bas-reliefs. Two groups of figures are shown: on the left Lot and his daughters with the inscription "Lot Ve 19" and on the right the death of Isabel ("Isabel 2 Reg 19"). The profiles are back on plinths that offer space for small busts as a bas-relief: the middle one is a male bust (marked “RR”), on the left a married woman, on the right an unmarried woman (with the inscription “IR”), so probably the daughter of Rinck. It is assumed that Rinck's wife, Margerethe von Holzheim, died around 1549 and the daughter took the place of the client. The loft is surrounded by a building base and cornice.

Stonemason's mark

The “PS” symbol can be found at least seven times on the portal. The portal walls themselves are marked six times with two other different stonemason's marks. These appear several times on the other window walls with three other stone carving marks. The monogram "PS" can be seen again on the bas-reliefs of the windows on the south side. The sculptor Philipp Soldan , who was probably responsible for the plastic jewelry, is identified with this symbol . The number of stonemasons' marks suggests that Soldan was busy with a total of five other stonemasons.

Interior construction

The house has a three-part floor plan. From a central forecourt, a round arched door branches off to the left to the northern hall, which extends to the full depth. On the west side a segment arch leads into the bay window with a simple star vault . The portal wall shows the Rinck coat of arms in the arch on the side of the hall , held by putti , above it a coat of arms from the late 17th century. Below you can see the representations of Adam and Eve . To the south, another renaissance door leads to the slightly elevated hunting room. Behind it is a bedroom . The round-arched room door with stone garments is decorated with crouching animals and flower tendrils, on the inside it is painted with weapons trophies (Turkish dagger, arrow quiver and armor) as well as with musical instruments. A coat of arms of Rinck stands opposite a second one with a squirrel (?). A third ornamented portal connects the room and chamber with one another. A cast iron stove with majolica top from 1661/1663 is one of the oldest furnishings. Extension work was carried out in 1672.

North wing

The middle building was built in 1539, as indicated by the year on the coat of arms stone. It consists of a massive ground floor and a half-timbered floor, crowned by a gable roof. The framework is 15 compartments wide and three compartments high. Two slightly curved “Alsfeld” long struts are used for stiffening. On the ground floor there is a pointed arched portal with beveled walls, framed by a window on the right and three windows on the left. Between the left windows there is a rectangular coat of arms stone with the inscription "1539 RR" (Reichart Rink). Remnants of the medieval red painting were found on the framework. It can be seen as a simple structure.

West wing

The west wing is based on the portal inscription from 1672. It also consists of a massive ground floor with a half-timbered upper floor, which is characterized by simple struts, ribbons and lugs . A hipped roof sits on top of it , and there are two gables on the courtyard side .

Reinforcement

The outer wall of the castle courtyard, which extends from northwest to south along the road, is provided with a small defensive tower and dates from the 16th century. The courtyard gate on the south side consists of a round arched passage on warriors and a gate with a flat lintel over profiled corbels , the bevelled garb is marked with 1589.
