José Curbelo

José Curbelo (born February 18, 1917 in Havana , † September 21, 2012 in Miami Beach ) was an American pianist, band leader and manager of Latin Jazz and Latin Pop .

José Curbelo, whose father was a violinist in the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra, began his musical education at the age of eight; He was considered a musical child prodigy and graduated from the Molinas Conservatory at the age of 15. In the following year he played with the orchestras Los Hermanos Lebartard and Gilberto Valdés before he co-founded the Orquesta Havana Riverside formation . In 1939 he moved to New York City , initially playing with José Morand and also appeared with Xavier Cugat , Juancito Sanabria and Oscar De La Hoya . In 1942 he formed a nine-piece orchestra that performed in Manhattan in Havana Madrid (1943/44) and also in resorts in the Catskills , Miami and Las Vegas; Tito Puente started his career at Curbelo. Its arrangers included René Hernández , Chico O'Farrill , Tito Puente and Al Cohn , who played in his sextet since 1953; as a singer he resorted to Tito Rodríguez . One of his most successful titles is Managua Nicaragua , which he recorded for RCA Victor in 1947 . In 1959 he founded Alpha Records , a musician agency; In the 1960s this agency had all of New York's leading Latin orchestras, La Playa Sextet and Orquesta Broadway, as well as Tito Puente and Machito under contract .

In 1971 he came to Miami with his wife Orchid Rosas, booked bands for the Calle Ocho Festival and worked as a real estate agent. In 1978 he came back to New York for a while to continue working in the Latin scene.
