The Krempe water tower is on the Mühlenberg. The Wallmühle, a Dutch windmill, stood there before. The Mühlenberg is the remainder of the southeast bastion of the former fortress that surrounded the city until 1706.

Building

The water tower , built in 1902, is a circular building with a height of 35.8 m. The shaft is built with bricks. The tower is only slightly wider in the container area. This has to do with the fact that a Barkhausen container was used instead of an Intze container. This container with a hemispherical container bottom no longer needs a support ring and therefore represents a step forward.

The casing of the Kremper container consists of a plastered iron framework, which was clad with slate on the outside. The top is a conical roof with a transmitting antenna attached to the top.

History of the water supply in Krempe

Until the beginning of the 20th century there was no central water supply in Krempe. Some of the water was taken from the Kremper Au or the castle moat, and some rainwater was also collected. The increasing deterioration in water quality - caused by sewage from households and a leather factory - led to the desire for a central supply around 1900. However, many citizens considered the project to be too expensive and oversized for a city with then only 1500 inhabitants. In the end, the proponents prevailed.

In 1901 and 1902 a waterworks with a well and a machine house was built in the Kremperheide . In 1902, the water tower was built on the Mühlenberg to stock up and generate constant water pressure. The old mill was demolished for this purpose. The construction work was carried out by the AG Licht Kraft und Wasser from Neumünster . This led to disputes with the city because unsuitable plaster was used to coat the container. It was agreed on an additional slate facing to prevent weather damage.

Decommissioning and further use

The water tower was in operation until 1972. Then the city sold the public utilities to the Schleswag . It was shut down because the tower was no longer needed for intermediate storage. The tower is still a prominent point in the townscape, but is no longer used if you ignore the transmitting antenna on the top of the tower. The tower is in dire need of renovation.

Today, Krempe gets its drinking water from the Krempermarsch water association .
