Felix Schadow (born June 21, 1819 in Berlin ; † June 25, 1861 there ) was a German painter. He is the son of Johann Gottfried Schadow and half-brother of Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow and Rudolf Schadow .

Life

Felix Schadow at the age of approx. 10 years

Schadow was born in his father's house on Kleine Wallstrasse (today: Schadowstrasse) as the third child of Caroline Henriette Rosenstiel (1784–1832), daughter of Friedrich Philipp Rosenstiel . He was encouraged as an artist by his father at an early age and often stayed in his studio in the backyard of Schadowstrasse, where he also learned from his assistants and students.

In 1835 he made several trips to Leipzig with his father . Julius Hübner was his teacher in Berlin in 1838 and 1839. Schadow studied from 1840 to 1843 in Dresden , where his work "Christ and Mary at Martha" (can be seen today in Charlottenburg Palace ) was created. He was inspired by the picture Christ with Maria and Martha painted by Jan Vermeer . At the same time he was a student of Eduard Bendemann in Dresden , who influenced his style as well as Hübner. Back in Berlin, he took part in the decoration of the museum hall and the fresco paintings by Karl Friedrich Schinkel .

After the death of his father in January 1850, Schadow decorated the walls of his former studio with a cycle of frescoes depicting his father's life when he was renovating his parents' house, which he still lived in. He also had a relief with the laurel-wreathed bust of his father placed on the facade. On February 22nd, 1852 he married Eugenie D'Alton-Rauch, the daughter of Johann Samuel Eduard D'Alton and Charlotte Amalie Agnes Rauch and a granddaughter of the sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch , whom he himself had accompanied on a trip to Italy in 1854.
