The water tower Oldenburg-Donnerschwee was built in 1896. It stands on Donnerschweer Straße and is a landmark of the Donnerschwee district . Together with the adjacent waterworks, it forms a uniform ensemble in the historicist architectural style.

Building

The lower two floors of the circular brick building are provided with surrounding blind arcades that extend over both floors and each have two windows. Above this is a wide plastered strip that leads to the narrower shaft part of the tower. The three upper floors of the shaft are externally separated from each other by two narrow cleaning rings. Narrow arched windows illuminate the interior. The transition from the shaft to the projecting head of the structure is plastered. The casing of the water tank then shows exposed brickwork again, which is structured by narrow windows and an arched wreath above.

history

Until the end of the 19th century, the water supply in Oldenburg was provided by decentralized public and private wells. The drinking water quality was often questionable. The situation only improved after 1896 when a central supply was established. The water tower was part of the water supply systems. It was originally supposed to be built at the Oldenburg horse market. But then the decision was made to build it on the site of the Donnerschwee waterworks . Initially, only one in ten of the 5300 households was connected to the network. Today there are three waterworks to supply the city's population: one each in the districts of Donnerschwee and Alexandersfeld and one in Sandkrug , a town in the neighboring municipality of Hatten , approx. 5 km south of the Oldenburg city limits. From a total of 45 wells, around 158,000 residents are supplied with around nine million cubic meters annually.

Although modern pumping systems make it possible to get by without water towers, the Donnerschwee water tower is still in operation. It serves to compensate for fluctuations in water consumption.
