Ensemble with administration building and railway viaduct |
The water tower of the Saatseewerft in Rendsburg lies between the Kiel Canal and the railway loop that leads to the high bridge . The brick structure forms an ensemble with the neighboring administration building of the shipyard. The buildings were built in the course of the expansion and modernization of the company as a result of the canal expansion between 1907 and 1914.
Building
The tower has a square plan. This shape continues up to an intermediate roof. This is followed by an octagonal tower head that looks as if it had been placed on the square roof. A gray-covered tent roof closes the building off at the top. The building edges of the square tower section are highlighted like pilaster strips with decorative masonry . The arched entrance portal has a semicircular skylight, a shape that is repeated in the small windows under the intermediate roof. Four large oval windows - framed by decorative masonry - adorn the tower head. Behind it is a Barkhausen water tank with a capacity of 100 m³.
Water supply to the shipyard
The Saatsee shipyard was part of the Imperial Naval Inspectorate founded in 1895 . The urban water network was insufficient to supply the company with water. Therefore, an in-house well was drilled to feed the water tower. Even after the municipal water supply was expanded, the shipyard maintained its own water supply with a well and water tower. The tower was not shut down until 1991. Today the company belongs to the Rendsburg building yard, an organizational unit of the Kiel-Holtenau water and shipping authority . The Rendsburg building yard looks after watercraft and technical systems on the canal.
