Wastl (comic)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wastl (in the original: Jérôme ) is a cartoon character by the Belgian illustrator Willy Vandersteen (1913–1990). The name is a Bavarian-Austrian modification of Sebastian .

Appearance of the "Wastl" comics

The character Wastl appeared for the first time in the German-speaking countries in the Felix comic booklets of Bastei Verlag and was initially a minor character in the "Ulla and Peter" stories (in the original: Suske and Wiske ), by Pankwitz (in the original: Lambik ) was accompanied. Felix had its own Wastl series from 1965 to 1968. When Wastl became even more popular, the publisher published its own comic booklet under the title Wastl in an initially fortnightly, later weekly cycle from May 1968 to January 1972. A total of 173 issues were published. In February 1972 the comic series was renamed This is Class , but in June 1973 it was finally discontinued. In the mid-1970s Wastl was represented in the paperback series Feuerwerk (there in volumes 14, 17-22). In 1983/1984 seven Wastl pocket books were published, but they only contained reprints.

Figures in the "Wastl Cosmos"

The following figures belong to the Wastl cosmos (especially in the "Wastl" magazines):

  • Wastl , the super power lacquer with the golden heart
  • Ricki , son of President Arthur, rascal and helper of Wastl
  • Professor Barabas , a great inventor
  • Aunt Sidonie , a blond elderly maid with hair on her teeth
  • President Arthur , boss of the "Goldmasken" and father of Ricki
  • Bumsi , the nuclear powered flying motorcycle from Wastl
  • Babsi , Wastl's secretary (only from 1970)
  • Beppo wooden eye , detective (only from 1970)
  • Napoleon , Koala (only from 1970)

Wastl received a new image in 1968. He becomes a superman in a yellow outfit with a cape . The "gold masks" are similar to the legend of King Arthur, a group of modern table knights, consisting of millionaires who are disguised with a golden mask and who pursue humanitarian goals. Wastl takes care of their jobs together with the teenage Ricki, the son of the gold mask boss, who always has a cheeky mouth on her adventures. The white-bearded Professor Barabas is a counterpart to Daniel Düsentrieb , Aunt Sidonie is a quirky, gaunt maid. Bumsi, the nuclear powered motorcycle that can ride on the road as well as fly in the air, is pampered like a pet by Wastl. In issue 97, Wastl says goodbye to the gold mask people and goes into business for himself. From then on he walks around with his eyes open (instead of closed, as in the past).
