Suske and Wiske
Suske and Wiske (Suske en Wiske) is a Belgian comic series . The boy Suske (Flemish short form of Franciskus ) and the girl Wiske (from Louise ) have adventures with often fantastic elements. The total print run is estimated at 145 million copies, which can be explained by the popularity in the Dutch-speaking countries and, above all, the long existence of the characters - the first story appeared in 1945.
The original author was the Flame Willy Vandersteen from Kalmthout . Even before his death in 1990, the series was taken over by other artists, the most famous of whom is probably Paul Geerts (born May 16, 1937). The series has been designed by Peter Van Gucht (scenario) and Luc Morjaeu (drawings) since 2005 .
characters
Suske and Wiske live with Aunt Sidonia, Wiske's biological aunt. Family friends are the super powerful Jerom and Lambik, a detective. Sidonia is in love with Lambik, but he does not reciprocate this love. Another regularly appearing character is Professor Barabas.
Surroundings
The characters live near Antwerp. The adventures take place on different continents and different epochs and ages.
International distribution
The volumes have been translated into a number of languages; in French, the main characters are called Bob et Bobette . Although the series is extremely popular in Belgium and the Netherlands, it is hardly known in other countries.
In Germany four Suske and Wiske album series were published by the publishers Rädler (1972–1973, 14 volumes), Feest (1991–1993, 3 volumes), PSW (1998–2001, 8 volumes) and currently, from 2010 by Salleck Publications. In addition, other stories appeared in the magazines Dalla (1953, as Ulla and Peter ), Horrido (1956), Felix (1962–1964, as Ulla and Peter ) and fled! (1988–1991, as Willi and Wanda ). An advertising issue was also published in 1983 under the name Frida and Freddie . An animated series ran under the title Bob and Bobette on Tele 5 from 1992 .
Despite these attempts, Suske and Wiske have not yet been able to establish themselves in Germany. However, the sub- series Jerom was well known under the name Wastl and appeared in various series at Bastei from 1965 to 1984 .
