Carl Velten

Carl Velten (born September 4, 1862 in Fluterschen , † April 1, 1935 in Woking , County of Surrey ) was a German linguist and specialist in East African languages. He taught at the Institute for Oriental Languages ​​at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin.

Life

Velten was born in 1862 in Fluterschen in the Altenkirchen district of the Prussian Rhine Province . After studying linguistics at the universities of Bonn and Tübingen , he traveled to North Africa . At the seminar for oriental languages in Berlin he prepared for civil service in the German colonies .

From 1893 to 1896 he worked as an interpreter for the German colonial administration in East Africa . On his travels through the country he collected stories and tales which he wrote down in shorthand .

After Velten had become a lecturer at the seminar for oriental languages ​​in 1896, he evaluated his notes in a series of publications. The main focus of his work was on the Swahili language.

Velten was a member of the Landsmannschaft Nassovia Bonn , since 1949 Landsmannschaft Teutonia Bonn .
