Wat Songdhammakalyani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Songdhammakalyani Monastery ( Thai : วัด ทรงธรรม กัลยาณี , RTGS transcription Wat Songtham Kanlayani , pronunciation [ wátˑsoŋˑtʰamˑkanˑláˑjaːˑniː ]), officially ทรงธรรม กัลยาณี ภิกษุณี อาราม , Songtham Kanlayani Phiksuni Aram ( "Songdhammakalyani Nunnery") is a Buddhist nunnery in the province of Nakhon Pathom in Thailand Central region . It is Thailand's first and so far only Bhikkhuni monastery.

location

The temple is located on the eastern outskirts of Nakhon Pathom on the Thanon Phetkasem from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom in the Mueang Nakhon Pathom . The Phra Pathom Chedi is located about four kilometers west of the temple grounds.

history

The site in front of the city of Nakhon Pathom was acquired in the 1960s by the journalist, teacher and women's rights activist Voramai Kabilsingh , who was ordained to the Bhikkhuni Ta Tao Fa Tzu in 1971 in Taiwan. Then she had an ubosot , as stipulated in the Vinayapitaka , and a Dhamma school ("Dhammapisamai School") built on the site. Since Thailand's official Sangha does not yet recognize the ordination of bhikkhunis, the institution has been refused the official status of a Buddhist temple / monastery ( wat ) . Dhammananda Bhikkhuni (civil Chatsumarn Kabilsingh), the daughter of the founder , has been the abbess of the monastery since her mother's death in 2003 .
