Watcha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the beginning of 2006 to the beginning of 2008, watcha was the mobile television service of the mobile TV provider MFD Mobiles Fernsehen Deutschland in the DMB process. In Germany it was the first commercial offer for mobile TV in broadcast mode; other mobile TV offers are available via UMTS .

Watcha made it possible to receive television and radio on mobile devices such as cell phones. Five TV programs could be received with watcha: the full programs from ARD , ZDF , N24 and MTV Music as well as the ProSiebenSat.1 Mobile TV channel, which was specially developed for mobile reception . The latter was a broadcaster producing exclusively for mobile TV with series, quizzes, comedy and reports that were specially designed for mobile use. In addition, the first visual radio station bigFM2see was fed nationwide. In addition to the music, the listeners can see background information and pictures of the performers.

watcha was a technology-neutral platform, i. H. Formats of other technical standards, such as the DVB-H standard, would also have been possible. According to the provider, reception was possible in 16 metropolitan areas.

On May 1, 2008, the broadcasting operation was stopped after the customer numbers never exceeded a low five-digit figure, and the EU Commission decided in favor of the competing DVB-H procedure as the EU standard. MFD is now also relying on DVB-H.
