MFD Mobile TV Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The MFD Mobiles Fernsehen GmbH Germany was a mobile TV -provider. The company was the first of its kind in Germany and was based in Düsseldorf .

MFD was founded in September 2005. The company has broadcast licenses in the DMB standard ( Digital Multimedia Broadcasting ) and was on the air with watcha from the beginning of June 2006 to April 2008 . With the discontinuation of DMB broadcasting, there was a realignment towards DVB-H . MFD had already applied to the state media authorities for appropriate broadcasting licenses in 2007 , and as part of the Mobile 3.0 joint venture founded with Neva Media GmbH, they received them in ten federal states in 2008.

Watcha made it possible to receive television and radio on mobile devices such as cell phones. For this purpose, TV cell phones from Samsung and LG were available in Germany .

MFD saw its tasks as a mobile TV provider in the clarification of the legal basis by obtaining broadcasting licenses from the state media authorities, the provision of content in cooperation with television broadcasters and content suppliers as well as the establishment and operation of a broadcasting network.

MFD's sales partners included the service providers debitel , mobilcom and the no-frills provider simply .

In addition, the visual radio station bigFM2see was fed nationwide. In addition, ProSiebenSat.1 Mobile had the “watcha TV” program window, which was produced by MFD.

Planned distribution area DVB-H

On January 15, 2008, the general conference of the state media authorities recommended that “Mobile 3.0”, a joint venture between MFD and Neva Media GmbH, be granted nationwide permits for a mobile program offering based on DVB-H. The actual licensing had to take place at the state level, so far Mobile 3.0 has received licenses in Bremen, Saxony, Thuringia, Hesse, as well as in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein and also in Berlin, Brandenburg, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. A collaboration with Media Broadcast was planned for the construction of the transmission systems . There were agreements in place that included programs from broadcasters from ARD, ZDF, RTL Group and ProSiebenSat.1 . The operating company Mobile 3.0 has meanwhile returned its license to operate a DVB-H service.
