The Debitel AG was a German telecommunications company with headquarters in Stuttgart-Vaihingen . With around 13 million customers, it was the largest cell phone provider in Germany.

At the same time, there was Mobilcom GmbH (formerly Mobilcom Communicationstechnik GmbH) belonging to Freenet AG . In 2011 both companies merged to form Mobilcom-Debitel GmbH .

history

Founded in 1991 by the Daimler-Benz subsidiary debis (with the participation of Metro and Nynex), it was a subsidiary of Swisscom until 2004 , indirectly through Swisscom Deutschland Holding GmbH with 93% share ownership.

Debitel AG owned a number of foreign companies in Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Denmark and Slovenia), which generated around a third of the turnover of the parent company (Debitel Group), and were all sold again by 2008. Debitel was not a pure cell phone company, but it was where its main business was. In addition, it had a broadband (DSL) and fixed line business in particular. The Debitel Group was the largest network-independent telephone company in Europe.

Despite the high volume of advertising for mobile communications , it did not have its own GSM mobile communications network . Debitel took part in the auction of UMTS licenses in Germany , but was the only company to get out early when the price reached uneconomical heights. The company used the liquidity advantage to buy up numerous small companies and to position itself on the market as a cross-network service provider.

Through its subsidiary Debitel Vertriebs GmbH , Debitel AG operated around 100 of its own mobile radio shops in Germany. The Berlin architectural office de Vos und Stegschuster was responsible for planning these mobile radio shops from 1998 to 2006.

Swisscom sold its shares in 2004 to the financial investor Permira . An extensive restructuring, which led to cuts in the workforce and the abandonment of a hotline location, was completed in mid-2005.

Since June 2005, Debitel AG had expanded its portfolio of what were previously three cellular networks ( T-Mobile , Vodafone and E-Plus ) to include the fourth, O 2 . Debitel also marketed DSL connections and was a full-range provider in the telecommunications sector with products from the areas of mobile communications , fixed network and Internet . Debitel also offered a combined cellular DSL tariff.

Debitel helped found the Jamba! involved. It was sold to VeriSign in 2004 .

Crash tariffs

In the years 2007 to 2009, mobile phone tariffs were marketed on the Internet under the designation crash tariffs .

The platform crash-tarife.de has been reactivated since April 4, 2011 and since then has been offering discounted mobile phone offers as a brand of Mobilcom-Debitel GmbH.

Merger with Dug Telecom AG

At the end of 2006 Debitel took over Dug Telecom AG with 430 branches. It was founded in 1993 as a direct sales force for mobile communications as Dittrich and Grella GbR. In 1997 the first telecom shop was opened in Oranienburg . In 2000 the GbR was transformed into an AG with 29 branches.

All Debitel Centers have been renamed Dug Shops . The mobile phone tariffs continued to be marketed under the name Debitel.

Takeover of Talkline

On June 5, 2007, Debitel AG announced the takeover of Talkline , which was approved by the European Commission on July 20, 2007 . The Danish parent company TDC A / S sold Talkline for 560 million euros. Previously, there had been speculation in the press about a takeover by Freenet AG . The takeover made Debitel AG the third largest mobile operator in Germany. The merger of the corporate headquarters of Talkline and debitel and the associated downsizing of the administrative units used Debitel to cut a total of 1,000 jobs. The Talkline headquarters in Elmshorn was closed in October 2010, when 730 people were still employed at the end of 2008.

Takeover by Freenet AG

In April 2008, Freenet AG announced that it would take over Debitel AG and its liabilities for around 1.6 billion euros from Permira . An agreement with the Debitel AG lenders is already perfect.

Debitel Nederland BV with 120 employees and around 530,000 customers has meanwhile been taken over by the Dutch mobile operator KPN .

On June 22, 2008, Debitel AG and Media-Saturn-Holding extended their sales partnership for the Saturn and Media Markt electronics stores.

After the conversion of Debitel AG to Mobilcom-Debitel GmbH, the mobile communications division has been operating under the new brand Mobilcom-Debitel since May 1, 2009 . All Dug branches were branded by then .

Sponsorship

From 1998 to the 2004/2005 season Debitel was the main sponsor of VfB Stuttgart , and Debitel remained a premium sponsor until 2008.
