Watchman Island is a small sandstone island in Waitemata Harbor in Auckland , New Zealand . It is located about a kilometer north of the suburb of Herne Bay . The island is Māori habitual property.

The island is clearly visible from the Auckland Harbor Bridge . The island briefly made headlines in 2005 when Adidas erected a metal figure dancing a haka (traditional dance of the Māori ). This was part of a promotional campaign by the All Blacks during the 2005 British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand . Although Adidas noted that the statue's erection had been colluded, it was eventually overturned by a saboteur who deemed it "culturally inappropriate".
