Web index

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A web index is the indexing of the World Wide Web and other documents accessible over the Internet . It thus represents a list of websites, images, videos, documents and other content that can be accessed via the Internet and must be constantly updated to include newly created websites. This is mostly done using so-called web crawlers . Saving and updating such a large index is very laborious. A web index is needed to quickly search the Internet. Many search engines therefore use a web index as the basis for their search. The four largest web indexes are operated by Google (USA), Bing (USA), Baidu (China) and Yandex (Russia). There are efforts in Europe for an open web index .
