Wechmann plan

One of the locomotive series created according to the Wechmann plan was the E 77.10 series
The class E 16 locomotives were also Wechmann Plan locomotives

The Wechmann plan stands for the creation of the first standard electric locomotives in Germany. He got his name from the responsible department head in the newly created Reichsbahn-Zentralamt , Wilhelm Wechmann .

Although the term standard locomotives does not appear in the literature for the electric locomotives procured according to this plan , it still partially applies to these locomotives; In a total of 201 electric locomotives with seven different series, 138 standardized components were used. The procurement of the machines began in 1924 and ended, including the replicas, in 1933. Since the series scheme for electric locomotives was not yet available when the first locomotives were built, the locomotives were initially given the names of the former regional railways.

The Wechmann Plan was implemented from 1920 when, after the First World War, the previously independent German state railways were transferred to the Deutsche Reichseisenbahnen and new locomotives were required for the continued operation and expansion of the electrical route networks opened before the war . For this purpose, a program for the production of electric locomotives was set up in a very short time, with which the test locomotives built before the war could be replaced.

Technically, the locomotives of the Wechmann plan were based on the successful designs from the time before the First World War, such as the Prussian EP 235 . The table overview shows that four of the seven locomotive series still had the outdated helical rod drive , two the Winterthur helical rod drive and only one locomotive series had a single-axle drive of the Buchli type .
