Patrick Johnstone

Patrick Johnstone (* 1938 ) is a British evangelical theologian and missionary , Bible translator , researcher and author of Operation World , which has been translated into 16 languages ​​and published in more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.

Life

Johnstone is the eldest son of a Northern Irish father and a Dutch mother and has five younger siblings. In 1959 he began to study chemistry at Bristol University. At a Christian meeting, he heard Glyndwr Davies talk about his work in the Dorothea Mission in urban churches in southern Africa. He then wants to have become a Christian and wanted to work as a missionary and evangelist. In 1962 he went to South Africa , where he completed his theological training at the Bible College of the Dorothea Mission in Pretoria .

He then worked as an evangelical missionary in Kenya , South Africa and Zimbabwe . He learned various African languages ​​such as Afrikaans , Nambya , Shona and Sindebele , which are spoken in southern Africa. Johnstone joined the leadership team of WEC International , an evangelical mission and church planting society , in 1980 . His duties there were strategy and research of evangelical mission. He was also deputy international director of the WEC for six years. He also participated in the Lausanne movement . In the 90 years he was co-director with John Robb of World Vision for AD2000 . He also worked closely with David Barrett, Todd Johnson, and other WCE researchers, which resulted in the Joshua Project.

Operation World

As early as the 1960s, Johnstone began to systematically collect and process data about the world that were also related to evangelism and mission. A first printed 30-page brochure called Operation World came out in 1965. A second, more comprehensive edition appeared in 1973. Ralph D. Winter of the US Center for World Mission (USCWM) and George Verwer of Operation Mobilization (OM) brought about a new edition in 1978 and promoted its worldwide distribution. Since then, more than 2.5 million copies have been printed and distributed worldwide in seven editions and 16 languages.

Private

In 1968 Johnstone married Jill Amsden from Britain, who also worked in the Dorothea Mission. They had three children together. Jill fell ill with cancer in 1990 and died in 1992. In 1995 he married Robyn Erwin, an American who worked for WEC. You live in Cambridgeshire, England .
