Henri van Effenterre

Henri van Effenterre (full name Henri Gabriel Marie van Effenterre , born March 11, 1912 in Paris , † November 3, 2007 ) was a French classical archaeologist . He was mainly concerned with the archeology of Greece and the Aegean Sea and, through his excavation reports and studies, provided important insights into the early history of the island of Crete .

Life

Henri van Effenterre, the son of the entrepreneur Edgard van Effenterre and Léonie born. Sponville, attended the Lycée Hoche in Versailles and the Lycée Condorcet in Paris. He then studied classical studies in Paris at the École normal supérieure , the École pratique des hautes études and the École libre des sciences politiques . After graduating, he went to the École française d'Athènes and took part in the excavations in Krisa near Delphi . He worked there with the archaeologists Jean Jannoray and Leopold Dor - and also with the art historian Micheline Cochard , whom he married in 1939 and with whom he worked for life.

From 1941 Effenterre was employed as an assistant at the Faculté des Lettres at the Sorbonne . During the Second World War , during the German occupation of France , he took part in the resistance of the Boy Scouts , to which he had belonged since his youth. He was badly wounded and lost an arm during these fighting. After the end of the war he wrote a history of the scout movement.

In 1946 he went to the University of Caen as a professor of ancient history , in 1949 as headmaster at the École supérieure des sciences et des lettres in Rouen and shortly afterwards as director of the College of Europe in Bruges (until 1952). At the same time he was director of the state antiquities supervision for Normandy from 1948 to 1960 . In the 1940s and 1950s Effenterre undertook excavation campaigns in Crete . In 1956/57 he led the excavations in Malia , to which his wife Micheline accompanied him.

In 1959, after the accidental death of Jean Jannoray, Effenterre was appointed as a chair representative at the Sorbonne. In 1965 he was finally appointed professor of Greek history. In 1982 he retired, but continued to do research. He has received several awards for his services: He was a member of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Rouen , bearer of the Croix de guerre 1939–1945 , Knight of the Legion of Honor and Commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and honorary doctorate from the Universities of Birmingham , Athens and Crete .
