Wedem Arad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wedem Arad (also Wedem Raad , äthiop. ወደም አራድ) (* probably before 1250; † probably 1314 ) was Neguse Negest ( emperor ) of Ethiopia from 1299 to 1314 .

Wedem Arad was the eighth emperor from the Solomonic dynasty that had ruled Ethiopia since 1270 . He was the second son of Yekuno Amlak (also Tesfa Iyessus), the first emperor from this dynasty. Wedem Arad succeeded the briefly reigning sons of his brother, Emperor Yagbea Seyon , to the throne. Overall, little is known about the reign of Emperor Wedem Arad, since Ethiopian historiography only began with his son and successor Amda Seyon .

Only one campaign by the emperor from the first year of his reign against the nomadic Muslim Sheikh Abu-Abdallah has survived. This sheikh had called for holy war against the emperor. Abu-Abdallah was eventually obliged to pay tribute and settled in the Shewa area.

Nothing is known about the circumstances of the death of Emperor Wedem Arad.

Due to the complicated transcription from Amharic, the spelling of Ethiopian proper names can be different in different publications.
