The excavation of the Wedge Tomb von Altar ( Irish Tuama Dingeach na hAltóra ) in County Cork in Ireland was carried out in 1989 by William O'Brien and Madeline Duggan. The facility is easily accessible on the Mizen Peninsula , on the south side of the R591 road from Schull to Goleen, near Toormoor Bay. She is one of many on the Mizen Peninsula. It is an Irish national monument . Wedge Tombs ( German  "wedge tombs" ), formerly "wedge-shaped gallery grave" called, are double-walled, seamless, mostly unarticulated megalithic of the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age .

description

The restored monument consists of a 3.5 m long gallery with three supporting stones in the southern wall and one in the northern wall 2.0 to 1.5 m away, all of which are now at an angle. The ceiling slab, located halfway in situ, measures around 2.7 × 2.3 m. The second displaced measures approximately 2.6 × 2.5 m. This Wedge Tomb is exceptionally robust despite its construction from very thin plates. The site of ancient ritual practices was used as mass rock in the 18th century .

Finds

During the excavation, the position of the no longer existing end stone and the low stone at the entrance, through wedge stones in the ground, could be determined. A pit with remains of fish bones and mussels was found on the eastern edge of the chamber . A small area in the western part contained cremated human bones. Flint , including a scraper, was found outside the chamber .

Nearby

Nearby are the Wedge Tombs of Arduslough, Kilbronogue and Toormore , the Portal Tomb of Arderawinny and the Boulder Burials of Dunmanus East, Lisheen and Coorydarrigan, and the Menhir of Cooradarrigan .
