Weem Old Parish Kirk

The Weem Old Parish Kirk , also Old Kirk of Weem or Weem Old Church , is a church building in the Scottish village of Weem in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The surrounding churchyard is also classified as a Category C building.

history

The church is dedicated to Cuthbert von Lindisfarne , who is said to have proselytized in this region in the 650s. The earliest church building on the site is documented in 1235. An exact year of construction of today's Weem Old Parish Kirk is not known. However, it was probably Robert Menzies who had the building erected around 1488. In 1609 the building was redesigned. The richly ornamented Menzies altar dates from 1614. The church was redesigned again in the course of the 18th century. Weem Old Kirk became obsolete in 1835 when a new church was built. The Clan Menzies , who reside at the nearby Castle Menzies , have since used the building as a mausoleum. Its roof was renewed around 1935.
