The Weender Street is the main shopping street in the city of Göttingen . It runs in north-south direction through the center of Göttingen and is largely a pedestrian zone. It is named after Weende , which is located north of Göttingen and is now incorporated .

history

Weender Strasse has had its character as a main street since the city was founded. The street was first mentioned in documents in 1338 under the name Wendensi platea , and in 1560 it was first mentioned in Middle Low German under the name Up der Weender Straten . With many shops and restaurants, the street is still defining the cityscape today. It was and is also a regular place of marches, demonstrations, parades, etc. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Weender Stroll took place here regularly . In 1972 the city began to designate the pedestrian zone, the scope of which was finally defined in the city's planning concept in 1974. Weender Straße and its side streets are pedestrian streets from their southern end to the junction with Jüdenstraße.

Weender Street around 1910 with the Weender Bummel

According to the municipal decision of June 3, 1864, the street from the northern end of the market square to the wall passage at Weender Tor was to be called Weender Straße . The south adjoining buildings opposite the old town hall were called Markt , the further course of the street south of the market square was called Kornmarkt . During the National Socialist era, these streets were renamed SA Street by a resolution of January 28, 1938 . After the end of the war, on April 17, 1945, it was renamed Weender Strasse , with the east side of the market and the former Kornmarkt street now also being referred to as Weender Strasse. The renewed separation of the street Kornmarkt - that is, the section from the southeast end of the market or the confluence of Rote Straße to Groner Straße or Langen Geismarstraße - did not take place until March 5, 1976. The previously valid house numbers were retained, so that the The numbering of Weender Strasse today begins on the west side with no. 11 north of the market and on the east side with no. 18 at the southern end of the market. The northern end of Weender Straße is still at the wall passage at Weender Tor, the northern extension to the boundary of the Weende district is formed by Weender Landstraße . The historic auditorium building of the university is already on Weender Landstrasse 2.

Attractions

Important buildings in Göttingen are located on Weender Strasse, including the St. Jacobi Church , the Old Town Hall , the Ratsapotheke and some guild houses: the house of the bakers 'guild on Kornmarkt (built in 1325), that of the merchants' guild on Rote Straße (built in 1545, demolished in 1872) and the smith's guild (built in 1572).
