Wehni Amba (Amharic Prison Mountain ) is an Amba in northern Ethiopia , it is the table mountain located directly next to the Wehni and with this is geologically a testimony to volcanism in the East African rift valley .

An initial investigation of the Wehni summit plateau, which is overgrown with trees, bushes and grass, produced potsherds as evidence of the earlier presence of people. The mountain, not far from Addis Zemman , became known as the place of exile for possible aspirants to the Ethiopian throne. The families of the ruling emperors, including their own siblings and children, were brought there. Escape was hardly possible. In order to climb the summit, an hour-long, dangerous climbing tour had to be completed; the prisoners were probably pulled up the mountain on ropes by the guards. The supply of food, drinking water and clothing could only be managed with the help of these guards. Even today, climbing the mountain is a great challenge.

The Wehni Amba , on the other hand, was relatively easy to climb and was used as a mountain fortress.
