An amba ( Amharic for "mountain fortress") is a geomorphological phenomenon in Ethiopia . It is understood as a table mountain with steep flanks, which is often used for settlement and fortress purposes because of its inaccessibility. In Tigre these mountains are called Emba .

Among other things, battles of the Italian-Ethiopian War of 1936 were named after these landmarks, for example those of Amba Alagi and Amba Aradam .
