Life

After graduating from high school in 1970, Weißeno studied at the Aloisiuskolleg in Bonn- Bad Godesberg at the Universities of Bonn and Tours for the teaching post at grammar school with a combination of political science and French. The practical teacher training took place at the Duisburg study seminar. From 1978 to 1995 Weißeno taught at high schools in Aachen , Wuppertal and Düsseldorf. He was the head of department at the study seminars in Wuppertal and Neuss . While working, he completed a degree in educational science and received his doctorate in 1989 at the University of Hamburg.

Weißeno was a lecturer in political science at the University of Wuppertal from 1983 to 1995. In 1995 he completed his habilitation in the field of political didactics and then worked as a private lecturer at the University of Wuppertal. In 1999 he was offered a chair for political science and its didactics at the Karlsruhe University of Education . In 2019 he retired.

Research areas

Weißeno works in the field of empirical teaching-learning research in the domain of politics. To this end, he has established the political didactic center at the Karlsruhe University of Education, which uses systematic studies of teaching practice, the individual learning requirements of students and the professional competence of (prospective) political teachers to provide findings on teaching and learning opportunities in political education. Tests provide information about the teaching-learning behavior and the factors for learning success. The results provide indications for targeted and effective teaching and learning in politics lessons. They are intended to provide new impulses for teaching practice. The work is interdisciplinary with psychology.

Another focus is on the theoretical development of political didactics. This is about the theory-based development of models for political competence and the conceptual development of educational standards for the school subject of political education at all school levels. Weißeno was involved in the presentation of a consensually obtained, concrete model of specialist knowledge for political didactics and political education in schools. It describes and structures the standards of specialist knowledge in the form of basic and specialist concepts.

Current development projects deal with the planning of competence-based political education. For this purpose, learning tasks for the competence dimensions of political judgment, political agency, attitudes and motivation are developed and empirically verified in intervention studies.

Honorary positions

Weißeno was a member of the state board of the German Association for Civic Education (DVPB) in North Rhine-Westphalia from 1984 to 1998 and a member of the federal board of the German Association for Civic Education from 1994 to 1997. From 1992 to 2012 he was spokesman for the “Theory and Practice” working group of the Federal Agency for Civic Education and from 2002 to 2012 spokesman for the political science department at the universities of teacher education in Baden-Württemberg. He was a member of the speakers' group of the Society for Political Didactics and Political Youth and Adult Education (GPJE) from 1998 to 2012, treasurer from 1998 to 2002 and spokesman for the society from 2002 to 2006.
