The white-framed dwarf fighting fish ( Betta albimarginata ) comes from East Kalimantan on Borneo . It is one of the so-called mouth brooders , in which the males hatch the eggs in their throat sac. It is relatively rare to find it in trade.

features

With a total length of four to six centimeters, Betta albimarginata is one of the smaller fighting fish species. The basic color of the male animals ranges from salmon to various shades of brown to dark red. The fins are provided with a bright, black and white border. The females are a little paler in color and the white edge of the fins is completely absent. Depending on where they were found, the size and color of the white-fringed pygmy fighting fish vary slightly.

The white-fringed dwarf fighting fish , which belong to the labyrinth fish family, have the so-called labyrinth organ , with the help of which they can also breathe atmospheric air.

Fin formula : D III – IV / 6–8, A X / 12–13

Occurrence

The distribution area of the white fringed pygmy fighting fish is limited to Borneo . Proven sites are Malinau and Sebuku. Here he inhabits both standing and flowing water. It lives in collections of fallen leaves, but also between branches, just below the surface of the water.

ecology

Depending on the origin, the water temperatures are very different. They vary from below 20 to over 30 degrees Celsius . Temperatures of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius are preferred for reproduction. The white-fringed dwarf fighting fish can be found at pH values between 5.5 and 6.5 with a total hardness of less than 5 ° dGH.

Reproduction

The reproduction of the white-fringed pygmy fighting fish begins with a few mock matings, most of which originate from the female. The female swims across in front of the male. The male signals his readiness to mate by swimming in front of the back and making barely perceptible head movements. Then the animals swim between plants to the ground where mating takes place. After being wrapped around several times, the female releases the eggs, which she picks up and hands over to the male. This is done by “spitting” the eggs. The male ingests the eggs and incubates them in his throat pouch for 15 to 19 days. The incubation time depends on the water parameters and the temperature. An average of 20 young animals are released, which can immediately cope with microorganisms in the form of nauplii. The old animals do not stalk their offspring if they are adequately fed.
