Johann Wissel (born July 14, 1584 in Neustadt am Rübenberge , † October 8, 1656 in Hanover ) was a German legal scholar and Brunswick politician.

Live and act

The son of the princely Brunswick-Lüneburg bailiff in Neustadt, Moringen, Friedland and Reinhausen, as well as the chief bailiff of the state of Göttingen Heinrich Wissel, had attended school in Göttingen and Hanover . From 1600 he studied law, first at the University of Helmstedt, and from 1602 at the University of Marburg , before he probably continued his legal studies again at the University of Helmstedt in 1604 and moved to the University of Gießen in 1606 or 1608 , where he probably completed his studies. In 1609 he returned to his homeland, where he worked as a lawyer. In the same year he became court judge for the postulated Bishop of Halberstadt Heinrich Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel .

In February 1613 he received his doctorate in Helmstedt for Doctor of rights, was in 1617, succeeding Andreas Cludius as a full professor of the institutions appointed to the University of Helmstedt and went in 1627 as Councilor to the court of Frederick Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel . After his death in 1634 he was a member of the interim government, served Georg von Braunschweig-Calenberg as court judge, court and chancellery from 1636 to 1641 , then also Christian Ludwig von Braunschweig-Lüneburg and in 1649 became a councilor, consistorial advisor and court judge assessor to Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Wissel's contemporary importance is based less on his scientific work than on his work as a valued and experienced practitioner. He served several Brunswick princes over many years in various prominent functions.
