Andreas Cludius, also Cluten, Kluten (born November 7, 1555 in Osterode am Harz ; † September 9, 1624 ibid) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Born as the son of councilor Johann Clüten, he attended school in Göttingen , Magdeburg and Gandersheim , studied from 1574 to 1576 and after a long break for another two years at the University of Helmstedt and Wittenberg . After he had completed his studies, he embarked on an educational journey that was customary at the time and received his doctorate in Basel in 1582 as a doctor of law.

When he returned to Helmstedt in 1583, he initially worked as a private lecturer and was appointed full professor of the institutions in 1585 . In 1589 he was promoted to the professorship of the Codex , became ducal councilor in Braunschweig and assessor of the court in Wolfenbüttel . In this function he was active in matters of the Walkenried monastery in Speyer and made a name for himself as a legal advisor. In 1617 he asked for his release from service and withdrew privately to his hometown Osterode, where he had a representative house built at Kornmarkt 12 (which is still known today as the Cludius House ).

In his scholarly works, Cludius dealt primarily with questions of Roman private law. He wrote treatises on the law of enrichment and on foreclosure. His son Johann Thomas Cludius also became a law professor at the University of Helmstedt.
