Herbert Demel began his career in 1984 as coordinator of anti-lock braking systems ABS applications at Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart . In 1985 he took over the position of head of ABS / ASR application, from 1988 Demel was the main department manager for ABS / ASR application & quality assurance, and in 1989 he also took over the development department for transmission control. During this time Demel was responsible for both the development of the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and quality assurance.

In 1990 he moved to Audi in Ingolstadt , where he became head of the engine and drive development department. Just three years later he was on the board of directors for the technical development division. In 1994 he became spokesman for the board of directors and in 1995 finally chairman of the board , replacing Franz-Josef Kortüm , under whom the company had got into a crisis. Herbert Demel immediately began with renovation measures. Even the first balance sheet under Demel's sole responsibility showed slight profits again. Mid-range models such as the A3 and A4 were introduced under his leadership . In 1997 he was withdrawn from Audi and appointed by VW boss Ferdinand Piëch, first as Deputy Chairman and a little later as Chairman of the Board of Management, to South America in order to reorganize the Volkswagen do Brasil subsidiary there . Demel was soon able to show success in Brazil too , and sales rose significantly under his responsibility.

When a successor to Ferdinand Piëch at the top of VW was sought in 2001 , Demel was also under discussion as a candidate. However, the VW supervisory board decided in favor of Bernd Pischetsrieder . Herbert Demel then left the VW Group and returned to his home country Austria, where he headed Magna Steyr's European activities from November 2002 and was supposed to prepare for the IPO . However, he left the company again a year later.

In November 2003 Demel switched to the ailing Italian car maker Fiat and was entrusted with the restructuring of the auto division. He was the first non-Italian to head Fiat GROUP AUTOMOBILES SPA Demel strengthened his team with former VW managers such as B. Stefan Ketter (head of quality), Johann Wohlfahrter (marketing and sales) and Harald J. Wester (formerly head of development at Magna Steyr and head of production at Ferrari ). After 15 months at the helm of the Italian automotive company, Demel left the group headed by Sergio Marchionne due to different strategic objectives .

Herbert Demel returned to Magna in June 2005 and was CEO of the subsidiary MAGNA Powertrain AG until 2007 . In 2007 Herbert Demel took over the role of COO Vehicles & Powertrain Group.

In April 2009, Magna International, under the leadership of Co-CEO Siegfried Wolf , Herbert Demel and Manfred Eibeck, submitted a takeover offer to the automotive group General Motors (GM) for its ailing European subsidiary Opel. Magna planned to take over a 55% stake in Opel together with the Russian Sberbank . The negotiations, which attracted a lot of media attention, in which both the German and American governments were involved, appeared to be over on May 30, when the German federal government announced that Magna would be awarded the contract. After Carl-Peter Forster announced that he would not be available for the management of a “New Opel”, Demel was to take over the role of CEO “New Opel” in the event of a takeover. At the beginning of September 2009, the American parent company General Motors announced that it agreed to the 55% takeover by Magna, but this notification was revised on November 3, 2009 by a resolution of the GM board of directors. Opel remained in the American GM parent company.

In 2010 Demel took on the role of President Magna China, India, South / East Asia, South America and Africa in addition to his role as Executive Vice President Magna International.

In spring 2012 he was appointed honorary professor at the Vienna University of Technology .

In July 2013 Demel resigned from all official functions at Magna International Inc. , but he will remain at the top of the company as a strategic advisor.
