The White-fronted Amazon ( Amazona albifrons ) is a parrots art from the genus of the Amazon parrot ( Amazona ). Three subspecies can be distinguished.
Appearance
The white-fronted parrot is one of the small amazon species. Their body length is a maximum of 25 cm. It is one of the few amazon species in which gender differences can be recognized by their appearance. The male has distinct, deep red wing feathers, which are also recognizable when resting. However, one should not always deduce the gender from the presence of deep red flight feathers, as hens also repeatedly show this characteristic! An exact sex determination can ultimately only be carried out by means of DNA analysis (gentlest method!).
distribution
The white-fronted parrot is originally native to the dry savannas and plateaus of Mexico and Central America.
attitude
Animals kept in captivity must be housed in pairs in at least 2 × 2 × 1 m aviaries. But they should also be able to fly around a lot. A relative humidity of around 60% prevents chronic fungal diseases. You need a varied diet with lots of fruit.
White-fronted amazons are very docile, but like most parrots, they can get quite noisy. The initially shy birds usually show a curious and interested creature after a while and can join their caretaker very familiarly. In contrast to some other amazon species, the white-fronted amazon are relatively calm birds, which only scream quite loudly in greeting , in danger or under stress .
