Weinplatz (Zurich)
The Weinplatz in Zurich is located in the Lindenhof district in the old town on the Limmat . To the north of the square is the Schipfe , in the east the square merges into the wide Rathausbrücke .
history
Around 1610 today's Weinplatz was called Hofstatt in front of the lower Brugg , later Hofstatt in front of the red tower , the former tower building of the Counts of Rapperswil , and from 1636 the old Kornhausplatz , after the location of the former Kornhaus . After its demolition in 1630, the public market for local wines took place here, so that it became a wine square and retained this name even after the market was moved.
In 1983/1984 the remains of two public baths ( thermal baths ) of the Roman vicus' Turicum were discovered in Thermengasse near today's Weinplatz, the ancient harbor district on the Limmat .
