Life

Hans Leu was probably born in Baden AG . After the early death of his father, he came to Zurich, his mother's birthplace, in 1488. Basel and Konstanz are assumed to be stations during his apprenticeship and traveling years. In 1489 he was mentioned in the building bills of the Grossmünster and was first mentioned in 1492 as a citizen of the city. In the following years he painted for the Fraumünster Abbey , and in 1504 the city commissioned him to decorate the festival square at the city festival. Leu died in 1507 at the age of about 45. After his death, his wife Anna Frick, then his son Hans Leu the Younger, continued to run the workshop.

Works

Leu's best-known work are the five panels he painted for the “Twelve Messenger Chapel” of the Grossmünster (altar of the city saints of the city of Zurich, “ The city of Zurich Conterfey ”). They were saved in the iconoclasm and are now kept in the Swiss National Museum.

Between 1497 and 1501 the tomb of the city saints Felix and Regula in the Grossmünster was redesigned, and Leu was commissioned to paint the " panels ad martyres " showing Felix, Regula, Exuperantius and their martyrdom. After the Reformation , the lower part of the panels was trimmed around 1566 and partially overpainted to create a complete city panorama. In 1936–37 the figures of the saints were partially exposed. In the background, the boards show topographically accurate city views of Zurich and its surroundings.

Some of the works attributed to Hans Leu show the national carnation mark (Carnation master).
