House for the male

House "zum Rüden" on Limmatquai (2008)

The Haus zum Rüden (also known as the Gesellschaftshaus zum Rüden or simply the Rüden ) is the meeting house of the Gesellschaft zur Constaffel in the old town of Zurich . Freestanding and originally built entirely on the water, it juts out a little compared to the neighboring houses on today's Limmatquai . With its history going back to the 14th century, it is one of the historically significant buildings in the City Hall district in Zurich.

history

Originally the house "zum Rüden" stood directly on the Limmat . The building was a very modest wooden structure and served the then city mistress, the abbess of the Fraumünsterstift , as a "coin" in which she had her coins struck. By resolution of the council in 1348 the now municipal mint was left to the journeymen (fellowship of boys), " who previously drank on the screed [dividing floor] on the house of the Lords of Lunkhofen ". This was linked to the condition that the ground floor of the building, which was then made of timber frame work, was to be provided with stone walls and left to the city for use - the Zurich council also served it as the town hall until 1401 . These journeymen were probably a group of nobles and wealthy merchants who belonged to the Constaffel. The city of Zurich built the ground floor, an open arbor , above which a society of noblemen built a drinking room, in which the Grand Council with its two hundred members sometimes met from 1348 to 1401. The house name "zum Rüden" appears for the first time in 1358 on an interest list of the Fraumünster, since 1401 the "drinking room of the gentlemen to the male" has been occupied.

Murer plan, excerpt

On the Murer map from 1576, the house can be seen directly on the Limmat south of the Zunfthaus zur Haue . The Reichsstrasse ran along the Limmat under the porch. Its present form received the property about 300 years ago, when the building to its current height increased was. Probably only since then has the top floor in half-timbered construction protruded on both long sides over the lower, around one meter thick house walls. The guild house owes its name «Rüden» to a wolf-like hunting dog and symbol of the aristocratic hunting law, which the Constafflers use as shield and guild coat of arms.

In 1868 the "Noble Society" sold the guild house to the city and in 1878 it was dissolved. From the official constaffel electoral guild, a “ relaxed, joyful and hard-drinking group of members ” had already formed around 1820 , which had formed a guild society around 1841 and established statutes, the so-called “ Sechseläutenfonds ”. In the new legal form as an association , today's « Gesellschaft zur Constaffel » was established in 1899 . In 1937 she acquired the house "zum Rüden". At the request of the city, a footpath was created under the “arches” on the Limmat side, which adapted the male's appearance to the surrounding houses on the Limmatquai. In addition, exterior renovations were carried out by the Bräm brothers and the interior fittings were redesigned by Andre Ammann, subject to the condition that the original building fabric was retained in the late Gothic style and that subsequent modifications were removed. What is impressive about the so-called Trinkstube - today's Gothic hall in the restaurant of the same name - is the magnificent, eleven-meter-wide vaulted wooden ceiling with the carved beam heads and the rich interior of the house with its renowned restaurant of the same name.
