The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is an internationally renowned British genome research institute near Cambridge . It played an essential role in the human genome project .

The institute was named after the two-time Nobel Prize winner Frederick Sanger . It is located on a Wellcome Trust campus in Hinxton , a village near Cambridge , UK .

In particular, the institute uses high throughput methods from the field of DNA and sequence analysis with the aim of better understanding genetic information and its role in sick and healthy people. In addition, the institute provides free of charge research results that it has generated itself or external research in the form of databases.

History of the Sanger Institute

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute was founded in 1992 and funded by a foundation for the advancement of science ( Wellcome Trust ) and a medical research community ( Medical Research Council ). The main aim of the foundation was to "play a substantial role in the sequencing and interpretation of the human genome ."
