Weltevreden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Weltevreden (Dutch for "well satisfied") was a suburb of Batavia (now Jakarta , Indonesia ) preferred by Europeans as a place of residence at the time of Dutch colonial rule, which was then about 12 km southeast of the city center.

Weltevreden, which is climatically more favorable to the health of Europeans than the old Batavia, became the center of Dutch colonial rule in the region from the beginning of the 19th century. During this time, the Laboratory for Pathology, Anatomy and Bacteriology and the Doctor Djava School were built, which should improve the health system. In Weltevreden in 1897 Christiaan Eijkman and his assistant Gerrit Grijns discovered the vitamin B 1 deficiency as the cause of the beriberi disease .

The focal points of the suburb were the squares Waterloo Plein (today Lapangan Benteng) and Konings Plein (today Medan Merdeka). The Schouwburg Weltevreden Theater was built in Weltevreden in 1821 , renovated in 1987 and is now used as the Gedung Kesenian Jakarta cultural center .
