Welthaus Bielefeld eV is a non-profit association in Bielefeld . It was founded in 1980 as the Third World House Bielefeld and renamed in 1999/2000. He is committed to socially just and ecologically sustainable development. A total of around 120 volunteers and around 20 full-time employees work in the non-governmental organization.

Welthaus Bielefeld is a registered association headed by an honorary, six-member board. This appoints a full-time management. In addition to full-time work, the 15 house groups form a central component of Welthaus Bielefeld. Beate Wolff is the managing director.

A foundation was established in July 2009. It is called the Welthaus Bielefeld Foundation. The foundation aims to promote development cooperation and international understanding, with a special focus on human rights and a socially just world economic order.

Development cooperation

The focus of the activities of the Welthaus is on development-related educational work and solidarity-based development cooperation. Welthaus Bielefeld is active in development projects in Guatemala , Mexico , Nicaragua and Peru , among others . The projects are intended to help improve living conditions in the respective countries. B. through climate protection measures or by promoting women's rights.

Town twinning

The Welthaus has been committed to solidarity work with Nicaragua since it was founded in 1980. It has promoted the development of the twin town Estelí in Nicaragua since the town twinning with Bielefeld began in 1995. For example, the reconstruction of a district that was destroyed by a hurricane was supported. The Welthaus still helps social projects in Nicaragua today and does public relations work for the town twinning.

Voluntary service weltwärts

The weltwärts association has been active in the Welthaus since 2008 . It enables volunteers to work on projects in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Mozambique and South Africa . weltwärts establishes contact with the partner organizations in the target countries, supports the volunteers with seminars in planning and preparation, and helps them finance their work. In addition, weltwärts acts as a permanent educational contact in Germany before, during and after the stay abroad. The south-north component of the program has also been carried out in Bielefeld since 2014. This means that people from countries in the Global South live in Germany for a while and support social organizations there with their work.

Education and Public Relations

In Germany, among other things, school partnerships and the promotion of projects for global learning are the focus of the Welthaus. For this purpose, teachers are trained accordingly and teaching materials on the subject of development work are offered, to which one can get access in the media library of the Welthaus. In addition, the database for teaching materials of the One World Internet Conference (EWIK) is operated.

Cultural work

In addition to the Shademakers Club, Welthaus Bielefeld organizes the Bielefeld Carnival of Cultures , which has been taking place annually since 1997. Other events that contribute to cultural dialogue are also supported, e.g. B. the world nights.

A café and shop are also operated in the Welthaus. Food and handicrafts from fair trade are offered there.
