World Congress of Universities

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Congress of Universities took place for the first time in October 2010 at the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi .

The President of the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi, Ali Akdemir , and the Rector of the Trakya Üniversitesi (Edirne), Enver Duran chaired the congress . The honorary chairman was Pier Ugo Calzolari , the former rector of the University of Bologna , who is vice-president of the International Association of Universities.

The question asked by the congress was: What goals and tasks do universities have in the context of global conflicts?

Ten university representatives from Australia and 250 participants from universities in the European Union, in particular Germany, the United States, the countries of the Balkans and the African and Asian continents came to this congress. A total of 50 universities were represented and a thousand participants from science, politics and business took part in the deliberations.

It was determined that in the future it will not be sufficient for universities to train students and award diplomas, but that the requirements and tasks of universities should broaden and redefine themselves in a larger environment. In particular, it was noted that universities, in addition to teaching and research, also make practical contributions to the prevention and resolution of global terrorism, global warming, natural disasters, crises, global hunger, income inequality, inadequate health and educational facilities, and regional conflicts and disasters to deliver on global migration.

The following topics were discussed in order to intensify university cooperation:

  • New definitions of university concepts in view of new developments
  • Understanding global climate change and countering it
  • Preventing Global Terrorism
  • Global poverty reduction
  • Solving the problems of global migration
  • Addressing income problems and inequalities
  • Eliminating injustice in health care
  • Reduction of the differences in opportunities in education
  • Solutions to Combat Pollution
  • Regional conflict prevention and prevention
  • Contributions to world peace
  • Protection of cultural assets
  • Problem solving in relation to rapid population growth
  • Strengthening and developing civilization
