history

In the planning and construction phase, the structure was part of planning section 13 in the middle section of the new line.

The structure was commissioned in 1991 as part of the new Kassel – Fulda section. Since then, the tunnel has been used by passenger and freight trains.

On November 3, 2010, a damaged intercity train that had run over sheet metal parts shortly before was evacuated in the globe tunnel. The route was closed for six hours.

On the night of October 11, 1998, one of the largest rescue exercises in northern Hesse took place in the globe tunnel. The exercise scenario envisaged a slight explosion on board an interregional train in the tunnel, causing a car to jump off the rails. More than 300 helpers, around 170 (slightly or not injured) passengers and 30 “seriously injured” people took part in the exercise. In addition to task forces from the Schwalm-Eder district, rescue trains from Kassel and Fulda were also involved in the exercise .
