The World Laughter Day is a world day , of every year on the first Sunday of May is celebrated. The idea comes from the yoga laughing movement , which is organized worldwide in over 6,000 laughing clubs in more than 100 countries on all continents. At 2:00 p.m. German time (12:00  GMT ), people in Europe laugh together for a minute.

World Laughter Day was launched in 1998 by Madan Kataria , the founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement. The celebration of World Laughter is meant to embody world peace and aims to achieve global awareness of health , happiness and peace through laughter. On this occasion, Madan Kataria publishes a written greeting (message) every year with his current thoughts on the importance of this day.

The first World Laughter Day meeting took place on January 11, 1998 in Bombay , India . At that time, 12,000 members from local and international laugh clubs met.

The first World Laughter Day meeting outside of India took place on January 9, 2000 in Copenhagen . The “Happy-Demic” with more than 10,000 laughing people on Copenhagen City Hall Square was included in the Guinness Book of Records .

In Germany , laughing people meet in numerous places on World Laughter. On May 1st, 2016 in Berlin, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt / Main, Göttingen, Hamburg, Hanover, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Münster, Weinheim, among others. In Switzerland , the Laughter Parade takes place in Zurich on World Laughter Day. Several hundred people walk through the center of Zurich, laughing, in order to then send a laugh around the globe. The event is rounded off with a large stage program, which also includes clowns, humor experts and cabaret artists.
