The space command of the Armed Forces ( WRKdoBw ) is a body of air force of the Armed Forces with seat in Uedem .

assignment

The command is to bundle all of the Bundeswehr's activities related to space. In the future, defensive operations in space are to be planned and conducted. The primary task is to monitor and protect the seven satellites of the Bundeswehr for communication and reconnaissance (systems SATCOMBw or SAR-Lupe ; from 2022 SARah ) against damage from space debris or weapons . The two planned optical reconnaissance satellites with the name Georg of the Federal Intelligence Service are also to be managed by the command.

organization

At the time it was set up, the command had around 50 soldiers and 20 civil servants. The posts are to be increased to 80 by 2022 , and in perspective to 250. In command, there is close cooperation with the cyber and information space and with the German Aerospace Center . The previously existing space situation center was integrated into the space command.

At the time of installation, the command was housed in containers on the grounds of the situation center on Paulsberg in Uedem. A new headquarters building was about to be completed when the command was commissioned.

history

The command was put into service on July 13, 2021 by the Federal Minister of Defense , Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer . It emerged from the Air and Space Operations Center , which was only set up on September 21, 2020 . In the “Key Issues Paper for the Future of the Bundeswehr” from May 2021, Kramp-Karrenbauer and the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr , Eberhard Zorn , announced the establishment of the command for the third quarter of 2021 in order to strengthen the dimension of air and space.

The first head of the command is Colonel i. G. Marco Manderfeld. He previously headed the Space Operations Center.
