World Poetry Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

March 21st has been proclaimed by UNESCO to be World Poetry Day . This day has been celebrated every year since 2000, the central event for Germany is organized by the House for Poetry and its internet platform lyrikline.org . It is intended to remind “the diversity of language as a cultural asset and the importance of oral traditions.” Furthermore, an intercultural exchange is to be promoted.

The day of remembrance should also help to counteract the loss of meaning of poetry . In the 19th century, according to the literary scholar Nikolas Immer, 20,000 collections of poetry were published in German-speaking countries alone - a number that now seems utopian. The day of action is intended to show that poetry can occupy an important place in cultural and social life even in the age of new information technologies.

Readings , exhibitions and recitations of lyrical works in media and cultural institutions take place on World Poetry Day. The central event in Germany has been taking place in the Max Liebermann House of the Brandenburg Gate Foundation since the beginning . Furthermore, poetic works are to be published and poetry prizes awarded. Students are particularly addressed. Children and young people around the world are encouraged to write poems on the subject of violence and peace . They also drum for peace that day at 11:30 a.m. (CET).

World Poetry Day is under the auspices of UNESCO and the United Nations .
