Wendelin Heene (born March 14, 1855 in Schönlinde ; † February 11, 1913 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss architect who, as a building contractor, planned and built important buildings in St. Gallen at the turn of the 20th century.

education

Heene, who comes from Northern Bohemia, attended an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, which he began at the age of fifteen, at the same time during the winters as the trade school in Zwickau and trained as a construction technician in Dresden. From 1872 he worked as a construction manager in Vienna before settling down for employment in the architecture office of the building contractor Forster in St. Gallen. He came there when he was 18 or not until 1880; With his son Carl Forster he founded a joint business from 1888 - and continued to run it on his own after his departure in 1893.

In the economic environment of the heyday of St. Gallen embroidery , Heene was able to build a large number of embroidery factories, commercial and residential buildings. As a master builder-architect, who was often involved in the projects as an entrepreneur, he had a great overall influence on the construction process, his buildings are often characterized by a careful choice of materials and very stable construction methods.Heene is considered to be the most locally important according to his biographer Heilig Art Nouveau architect.

At the end of the 1890s, he anticipated the style of the embroidery offices, with large window surfaces and the reduction of the wall to the weighting pillars , in his architectural work, whose three-dimensional shaping, ornamentation and architectural order were initially shaped by the Ringstrasse style.

In addition to his main activity in St. Gallen, Heene also built in Flawil , Degersheim , Arbon , Hohenems , Heerbrugg and other places.

After he had to go to hospital and treatment from 1902, he died of influenza in 1913.
