geography

The place is strongly agricultural. However, the townscape has changed significantly in the last 40 years due to new settlement areas. Only people who earn their money outside of Wendenborstel (Hanover, Bremen, Nienburg) live in these new settlements.

history

Wendenborstel was first mentioned in 1371 when an "Engelbert von Wendenbostel zu Nienburg" was put under the spell. There followed several references to court purchases, donations and the like. In 1504 Duke Erich I confirmed the contract between Rodewald and Wendenborstel, according to which the latter were allowed to cut alder and birch trees in Rodewalder Bruch and mow heather and plagues , and they were also allowed to graze. This settled a centuries-old dispute between these two places for the time being. The matter is said to have dragged on until 1667. As a result of the Thirty Years' War , three farms were vacant in 1683.

In 1879 a large part of the village, including the chapel, burned down. The following year the village was rebuilt and the new chapel was completed in 1881. The local electrical network was established in 1921 to such an extent that the schoolhouse could be electrically lit. In the same year the shooting club was founded.

In 1941 Wendenborstel recorded the first five dead in World War II . The village's own cemetery was inaugurated in 1944, before all of the residents were buried in Steimbke. On April 9, 1945, English troops marched into Wendenborstel. In 1946 110 displaced persons from Hartmannsdorf ( Silesia ) were quartered, which made living space in the village very scarce. The village's volunteer fire brigade was founded on November 23, 1951, and a war memorial was inaugurated two years later.

On February 2, 1974, it was unanimously decided to incorporate the political community of Wendenborstel into the Steimbke community. The villages of Klein Varlingen and Riede still belonged to the former municipality of Wendenborstel. Since March 1, 1974, Wendenborstel has been part of the political municipality of Steimbke.
