Wendo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wendo is self-defense and self-assertion for women and girls. The name is a new word creation analogous to various Budō arts, which is composed of Wen , an abbreviation for the English women (women), and Do , Japanese for way, and means "way of women". Wendo does not count itself to the martial arts , but sees itself as a prevention program against violence. It was founded in Toronto in 1964 by the couple Anne and Dr. Ned Paige developed. Wendo came to Germany at the end of the 1970s and has developed here as part of the women's and lesbian movement.

Wendo sees itself as a concept for preventing violence and is offered in schools, youth centers, women's counseling centers, facilities for the disabled and increasingly also in work contexts. In contrast to classic martial arts, the training is based on an examination of patriarchal power structures and learned sacrificial attitudes. Wendo starts with the experiences and wishes of the participants and includes effective techniques, role plays and perception exercises. One goal of Wendo is to improve the self-organization skills of the participants. The trainers usually work independently and are organized in regional groups that also offer training and supervision. The training is offered part-time and usually lasts 2–3 years. In 2016, “Wendo” was registered as a word and figurative mark in the DPMA's trademark register by trainers from the Rhineland regional group (www.wendo-rheinland.de ). The aim is to secure the feminist concept against unauthorized users and to set standards for training.
