Wenno

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wenno (also Winne , Wynno ; † 1209 in Riga ) was the first master master of the Order of the Sword of the Brothers in Livonia .

Mentions

Heinrich von Lettland reported about him in his chronicle of about 1209/38, as well as the Livonian rhyming chronicle of about 1290. Hermann von Wartberge mentioned him briefly around 1380 with information from the other two works.

Life

The medieval texts do not provide any information about Wenno's origin, nor about his beginning in office. Since the Order of the Brothers of the Sword was founded in 1202, he must have come to office soon after. The Livonian Rhyming Chronicle reported that “Winne” built the castles Segewald , Wenden and Ascheraden and conquered Kokenhusen . The contemporary Heinrich of Latvia first mentioned it for the year 1208.

At the beginning of 1209 the master master was slain by a knight Wickbert . The reasons for this are unknown. His successor Volkwin was named in office for the first time that autumn.
