Volkwin von Naumburg to Winterstätten
Volkwin von Naumburg zu Winterstätten (also Wolquin, Folkvin, Volkewîn, Wolguinus, Wolgulin ; † September 22, 1236 ) was Lord Master of the Brothers of the Sword from 1209 to 1236 .
Volkwin probably came from Naumburg an der Saale. He was the successor of Vinno von Rohrbach , who was first master of the Sword Order from 1207 to 1209 ( Latin: Fratres miliciae Christi de Livonia ). Volkwin himself was a confidante of the Riga Bishop Albert von Buxthoeven (around 1165-1229). He led the Eastern Crusades of the order against the peoples of the Baltic States , through which Christianity was to be introduced there and the country should be conquered for the order.
Volkwin fell in 1236 in the battle of Schaulen in the fight against the Žemaiten . The battle was a heavy defeat for the Brothers of the Swords. A year later, the Order of the Brothers of the Swords was absorbed into the German Order . The exact location of the battle is not known. Historians suspect it either near the Lithuanian Šiauliai (German Schaulen ) or near Vecsaule (translated old Schaulen ) in southwest Latvia .
